TEST DRIVE

SOMETIMES YOU JUST KNOW A GOOD BOARD BY THE WAY IT FEELS IN YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU FIRST PICK IT UP, WHEN THE GUYS AT NOMAD SENT ME THE NEW MODEL TO TRY OUT I WAS AMPED ON IT AT FIRST SIGHT, WITH AN ALL NEW SHAPE, NEW TAIL AND NEW RAILS THIS THING WAS LOOKING SPOT ON

THE THING THING IVE NOTICED ABOUT THE BOARD IS THE RAILS, THERE 50/50 MAYBE EVEN PUSHING 40/60 WHICH I HAD NEVER TRIED BEFORE, MAKING THE BOARD SUPER LOOSE AND RESPONSIVE  FOR SHARP BOTTOM TURNS AND FAST SNAPS IN THE POCKET

IVE ONLY BEEN RIDING THE BOARD FOR A FEW DAYS NOW, BUT IM LOVING THE THING

IM JUST AMPED TO BE RIDING A STOCK BOARD THAT ANYONE CAN WALK INTO A STORE AND BUY AND KNOW ITS GOOD

THANKS MARK KEANE FOR THE SHOTS

.

.

IM FINDING THE 40/60 RAILS ARE MAKING THE BOARD SUPER RESPONSIVE GOING FROM RAIL TO RAIL WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT

.

.

THIS ONE WAS A FAST CLOSEOUT WITH NOT MUCH TIME TO GET TO THE SECTION BUT AGAIN WITH THE NEW SHAPE AND RAILS I WAS ABLE TO COME STRAIGHT INTO A FLOAT – THE BOARDS ARE FEELING FAST

PAUL ABOUT PAUL

Castle telling Roach how to get more speed out of his surfing

.

TLP: Rumour has it that you’re responsible for shooting most of Roach’s section – any truth to that?

PC: It’s the best section and filming in the movie of course I shot it (sorry that makes me sound up myself ive spent a bit to much time on facebook of late and been picking up some bad habits haha) but yes I can put claim to this question

.

Castle has Roach carrying his shit around

.

TLP: Tell us about those 3 days and the angles you shot

PC: The 3 days were amazing up at sparrows fart and home at dusk, hanging with Roach was an honor really laid back down to earth and would talk about anything and everything as if he knew everyone for ages. Some how we lucked into days of left-hand wedges basically for roach like taking a kid to a candy stop. The angles I covered were your stock standard straight on but the others were lucky to get as we had full access to the sand pumping (one of lackeys fingal peasants works there) jetty giving me a birds eye few you rarely get over the surf of what was going on and what sets were coming, another bonus of this was being able to fight the horrid east coast sunrise light.

.

3 video cameras and 1 water photog all capturing this session from different angles! overkill?….not when Roach is in the water

TLP: As a still’s photographer was it hard to sit and video all-day?

PC: Sit there!?! Was no sitting wish there was thou, as now I need a full reconstruction, which will be coming out of your video sales haha. Filming for the first time was full on you have to be on your game a lot quicker and a lot longer as those pesky video cameras take for ever to start recording, I had triple vision after I stopped filming from looking into the thing all day long, but seeing the results after is very satisfying.

.

TLP: Was there a particular highlight from the sessions with roach?

.

PC: There’s no one particular highlight from a single session the highlight was 3 days long watching someone I’ve watched on vids for years come to oz for the first time in years and destroy every wave he took off on. Speed style and power

.

Calming the Badger

.

TLP: Your also renowned as a person that says what everyone else is thinking but would never say…any truth to that?

.

PC: Trying to get me in trouble with this one Lackey, I spoke out on something I thought was very serious only the other day that others wouldn’t because they don’t want there facebook numbers to drop, people need to realize this is the real world and this stuff happens every day all over the world, if you think you can go through life having the same friends (acquaintances) then your being stupid, I can count my TRUE friends on both hands and that goes for pretty much everyone in the world

Back To Work

Well since Hawaii ive been back home settling in, the flea market has been in town (quiksilver pro) so i havnt been in the water to much, but last night i got a msg from good mate Luke Bickley and we tee’d up to go shoot some water at a local watering hole, so it was back to work in the office today, few fun ones early then things turned serious when Tim Jones turned up shooting photos, you see when you blow a wave infront of this man you get abused! to the point that self doubt takes over and you find yourself in the lip more times then not.

Luckily today i was able to hold a rail and the abuse was kept to a minimal

Tim Jones on the Job, its been a few years since we shot together, Jonesy is THE photog you don’t want to blow a wave in front of…. he’ll let you know (and everyone in the water) all about it for the rest of the session.

DK stomp crew

Today the swell jumped up early, obviously nothing huge but enough to get you in water, Off The Wall was the choice for the DK stomp crew today, here are a few grabs to feed on.

I’ve been product testing the new ATTICA suits, the new seasons stuff is next level!!

After filming duties it was my turn to surf, juuuust as the wind came onshore! fark!

Will n JJ talk’n trash

Will about to down stomp this section with style

Manny Vargas even rocked up to show the hot blooded latino’s who’s boss!!

Personal Coach?

.

Keith Sasaki is the man who Aka Lyman and Paul Roach say was one of there biggest influences when it came to Dropknee . Even though Sasaki told Roach to “stick to prone” they still claim this man as there Idol

As pictured here Sasaki has been training me for the past month while ive been over here on the North Shore

(this is total bullshit he’s just handing me my board back)

DK WARS CLIP

Here is a quick clip from DK WARS….

DK WARS!!!!!

DK WARS went to a next level today, i was expecting 3 foot fun off the wall but we were greeted with a romping new 6 foot NW swell detonating on the reef at off the wall.

I was such an amazing vibe everyone was rocking up with eskys, bbq’s and tents to enjoy the mayhem, everyone was going so hard too!!! i seen guys pulling into solid 6 foot closeouts just to keep the beach amped, you could hear everyone erupting on the beach each time someone got a wave (or the beating of there life with im sure we all got)

We signed up as a team (me-john gibson-eddie wearne- will goerge) we had to name out team, that changed a few times (the sex offenders/the skuller draggers) Gibbo was going nuts, sitting down from off the wall pulling into solid 6 foot drainers, eddie was scooping into pipe and will was out sexually offending

Our team didnt win “best team” that went to Hawaiian “Nalo Crue” who were all dominating off the wall literally allday! a solid effort and a well deserved win!

I was lucky enough to win “best solo performance” so im really amped to get the votes from all the hawaiian guys there, it means alot to me!

This would have to be the best event ive been in for sure, no contest rashy, no time limit, just everyone together pushing each other! then everyone comes together and votes….epic day!

BACKDOOR EXPRESS

Ohhhhh the highs and lows of contest, I’ve never enjoyed the things, maybe its because i just cant win them but also the amount of nerves i get before the event is mind blowing, i honestly don’t know how guys do the whole tour, id be an emotional mess

The DK Pipeline Pro ran yesterday in perfect Backdoor, solid 4-5 foot caverns, it was such a good day of waves, and the whole contest was run really well with the amazing live feeds so you at home can log on and see what is going on, bodyboarding has really stepped up to a new level

Some of the highs were obviously Kim Feast taking the title but also Dave Winchester mental barrel, i mean i honestly looked away because i thought there was no way of him coming out, then in the corner of my eye he came screaming out, just mental..he earned every inch of that 10 points

My first heat i was with Bud/Wonton/ and Miles Kauhaahaa man it was a tuff heat, Miles got some really nice ones, Bud thank god didnt get a pipe bomb and Wonton blew his knee out, i was in 3rd until the last minute when i got one right on the buzzer, i milked 2 snap reverses which was just enough to get me over the line into the quarters

The Quarters started of really well, or at least i thought, i got into a nice backdoor runner, as i was running through it i could see the thing was starting to get away from me so the only way out was to drive straight out the front to make the thing, basically a last ditch effort, and to my surprise the thing let me out. I was amped paddling back out thinking i had a solid score under the belt, so i kinda kicked back for most of the heat until i heard i was in 3rd needing a 3.5….down to the last minute there was nothing going on, i was clutching at straws to say the least and got one small inside one, but it wasnt enough to get me the 3.5

I was pretty bummed for the rest of the day about the score of the first barrel, but that kinda thing has happened to everyone at some stage, and there is nothing worst than someone kicking and screaming at the judges… its just how the cookie crumbles

On a whole the event was amazing, huge thanks to the IBA for holding such a great event, amazing webcast and to FEASTY for bringing the win to Australia…My only regret was not carrying feast up the beach after his win, piss weak effort on my behalf!
